HISTORY OF OUR CLUB

Rabun County has an impressive background in pickleball.  Residents began playing in the gyms at the Rabun County Recreation Department in 2015.  As people heard about this game with the silly name, Director, Roy Quilliams, marked off courts in the county’s gyms so they could give it a try.

As the popularity of pickleball increased, local players began to play in tournaments that popped up across Georgia.  Rabun County players fared well by bringing home a range of medals. Director, Roy Quilliams, was one of them. In the fall of 2017, the County’s Rec Department hosted their first tournament, the “Pickled Turkey Shootout” and in the spring of 2018, the “Battle of the Paddles”.

In 2018, Rabun players brought home more District/State Championships than any county in Georgia!

Since Rabun County did not have outdoor public courts, tournament enthusiasts found it necessary to travel to other counties to improve their games. They explored ways to bring the outside game home and realized there was a genuine interest to build outdoor courts.

In 2022, the Rabun Pickleball Club, with its nine-member Board of Directors, obtained a charitable tax status from the IRS, (501c3). This status allowed the club an opportunity for community service. In 2022-23 our members raised money for local charities such as: F.A.I.T.H. (Fight Abuse in the Home), Paws for Life,
A Place of Hope, The Foodbank of Northeast Georgia, Sid Weber Cancer Fund

OUR CLUB TODAY

Today the Rabun Pickleball Club has over 200+ members making it the largest club in Rabun County. Our club gained approval on March 26, 2024, with a unanimous vote by the Rabun County Board of Commissioners, to build a 10-court pickleball facility for the community on the grounds of Rabun County’s recreation complex. Construction is planned to begin in April.
Local open play is most mornings, rain or shine, at the Rabun County Rec Department’s three gyms. If you would like to join us, Tuesday and Thursday mornings are the most popular. We use a rotation system for Open Play so anyone can join in.

OUR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Our club offers a wide range of activities throughout the year, both social and competitive. We have bi-monthly potluck lunches after play, seasonal parties, after-hour socials, home parties hosted by club members, and charity fundraising events. Because we have beautiful mountains, waterfalls, lakes and streams, volunteers plan group hikes and water excursions.

OUR COMPETITIVE ACTIVITIES / IMPROVING YOUR GAME

There are opportunities to improve your game or to compete. Board members organize DUPR Ladder Leagues, Round Robins, and Club Wars with neighboring counties. An “Introduction to Pickleball” clinic is offered by our Ambassador, Tracy Barry. Club volunteers have organized 3.0 and 3.5 Ladies Drills with club Certified Instructors generously donating their time.

“The Rabun County Board of Commissioners in 2015 commissioned a sports tourism study through the Tourism Development Authority (TDA). As a commissioner and TDA board member at the time, we saw real time data clearly defining the social and economic impact of sports and sports tourism for Rabun County.”

“This pickleball facility will have a quantifiable impact for decades.”
